Orange Beach hosts vacationers for the beach atmosphere, music and the many sporting events and tournaments hosted by the Orange Beach Sportsplex. Residents can use the Backcountry Trail system through the Gulf State Park with the trailhead located at the Sportsplex. Additionally, Orange Beach is home to the tallest Ferris wheel in the Southeast. Annual events include the Mystics of Pleasure Thunder Run in Happy Harbor; the Hangout Music Festival in nearby Gulf Shores; the National Shrimp Festival; and the many music events at The Wharf. Nearby Mobile is home to an array of cultural influences with its mixed French, Spanish, Creole heritage, in addition to British and African. Mobile hosts the annual Carnival celebration and is the birthplace of Mardi Gras. Residents can visit the nearby Mobile Museum of Art, the Saenger Theatre of Performing Arts, the Mobile Symphony and Opera, or head to the annual BayFest, the metro area's popular three-day music festival. Education Orange Beach is part of the Baldwin County Public Schools system. The city's only school is Orange Beach Elementary which serves students in grades K-5. Older students attend Gulf Shores Middle School and Gulf Shores High School in the neighboring namesake town. For higher education, students may attend a number of nearby campuses including University of South Alabama, Bishop State Community College, Spring Hill College and University of Mobile, to name a few. Economy With a prime location on the water and abundant natural resources, nearby Mobile is the metropolitan hub that has enjoyed a steady economic increase throughout the last 20 years. Medicine and research, aerospace, retail trade, construction and manufacturing are among Mobile's major businesses. The area's fastest growing industries include tourism and services. |
